People raise their question against the government of India in a social media platform. Over the last few months when huge number of Corona cases in the country has seen a steep rise setting new daily records of cases every day, the calls for PM’s resignation on platforms like Twitter and Facebook have also intensified. Now government blames the system for their failure.
Modi Resign campaign was trending with nearly two lakh tweets at the time of posting this report. During the campaign, Twitter users expressed anguish over various aspects of failure of governance including the COVID crisis, unemployment, and farmers’ protests. Users tweeted using hashtag #मोदी_इस्तीफा_दो which was soon one of the top trendings hashtags on Twitter India.
Social media companies with large user bases in the country will have to significantly alter their operating model to accommodate the new mandates from the Indian government under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, which came into force on February 25, as part of Section 79 of the Information Technology Act.
Now people raise the question is this new social media law enacts to suppress the voice of common people. By new law social media have to disclose the identity of the people and the source of message if governments want it. Indian police have visited a Twitter office to serve notice, after the social media giant labelled a tweet as “manipulated media”.
The incident comes after Twitter applied the label to a tweet by ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sambit Patra. It comes amid tense relations between the Indian government and Twitter.
